Battle to the Death!

When Milo Morai, the Undying High Lord, and his Horseclans warriors found the tower ruins, they welcomed it as the perfect citadel from which to hold off the packs of ravenous wolves eager for their blood.

But the ancient building hid a secret far more dangerous than either wolves or any human foe, for in its depths waited The Hunter--the penultimate product of genetic experimentation gone wild, one of the few descendants of a powerful breed that had long outlasted its human creators.

The Hunter--who, with fang, claw, and blood-chilling speed--would challenge the Undying Lord himself to a battle to the death.

The Clan Of The Cats Horseclans Series Book 18 eBook Robert Adams

The author was so wrapped up in getting his political views presented to the reader that he forgot to focus on the writing. There were some sections in all of these books that were stellar segments of writing, but most of it was disjointed as he traveled through time from the future to his main characters past, and the transitions were not well done. He would have been better off writing two groups of novels - one a futuristic alternate earth story focused on his characters of the future, and the other a set of novels about living as a soldier during a war and surviving an apocalypse in that time frame. If he had written this as two separate books without the inserted political drivel, both would have been good - but with the confused disjointed jumping back and forth, it was a bitter disappointment. Especially as I had looked forward to reading novels that were about the characters from a short story about the Horseclans which I had previously read.
I am not sure if this one did it (I read the entire series since I had already bought them) but there was also a lot of repeating of earlier writing incorporated into later books that were something of the entirety of the Horseclans sections without any new material of substance about them. Some added new material to previously written sections or added the same story line from a different point of view, but it was interspersed between sections on his other topic.

The Clan Of The Cats Horseclans Series Book 18 eBook Robert Adams Reviews

i enjoyed the
Excellent contiuation of the series. It was good to find out how the horseclans partnered with the cats. It is a shame that Robert Adams could not contiue with the series. I really enjoy the seried
I've read 11 books in the Horseclans series, and of those this is my least favorite. The storyline jumps back and forth in time in a very disjointed way and the first 50 pages are repetitive--simply a slightly more detailed account of the Undying High Lord Milo Morai's discovery of the telepathic prairiecats, as described in book #12 A Woman of the Horseclans. In my opinion, it would have been so much better if the few additional details about prairiecats presented here (book #18) had been interwoven into the earlier novel.

After rehashing the stranding of Milo and several Horseclans warriors in an abandoned government building, where they have taken refuge from a winter storm and a pack of hungry wolves, the author adds a new story line about the research team that inhabited the building before the great war. Unfortunately this story is very boring, focusing more on political and personality quarrels between team members (people you've never heard of and will never hear of again) than on the process of recreating an extinct feline species. You learn that reverse engineering modern species to recreate their prehistoric ancestors was a hot topic in the scientific community before the apocalypse. In particular, there is brief mention of reproducing prehistoric horses, the wisent (European bison), the aurochs, and the Tatzelwurm--a nasty, giant toothed amphibian. But of the prairiecats' origins, all you learn is that the onetime garage was reconfigured to house big cats, specifically three snow leopards, a white jaguar, and two genetically reproduced cave lions. All interesting details of the breeding program are omitted.

The book not only jumps back and forth between Milo's encounter with the wounded female prairiecat holed up in the abandoned facility and the boring story of fundraising the long ago breeding program, but it also digresses into Milo's experiences as an officer of the Vietnam War going head to head with boorish politicians and civil servants. Basically this storyline turns into a rant against all liberals (McGovern, the Kennedys, and Johnson, etc.). This is military conservatism at its worst paranoid, aggressive, and narrow-minded. Adams's prejudices really take over, I think. Aside from a few new details about the prairiecat project, I'd just as soon toss this novel in the trash.
good read for the old style science fantasy.
Fantastic storyline and a must read!!! This book was very well done and I will have to read it again.
None
The books are a great read. Unfortunately, the publisher did not employ a proofreader. Typos on every page. Very distracting.
